Photographer Lillian Bassman Has Passed Away

Barbara Mullen Blowing Kiss, Harper’s Bazaar – Lillian Bassman c. 1950

American fashion photographer and art director Lillian Bassman has passed away at the age of 94.

Lillian was best known for her dramatic black and white works for Bazaar Magazine in the 40s and 50s, but she had a resurgence in the 90s.

The picture above is one that I have loved for years. I don’t know where I first saw it, and until today, I had no idea who took it. In fact, I discovered this evening that I have really appreciated many of her photographs never knowing who took them. It was just the feel I was getting from them.

I wish I could have expressed my fondness for her work while she was still with us.

My heart goes out to her family.

If you want to read more about this daughter of Jewish Russian immigrants turned art director, the New York Times has a fantastic write up.
