New To BBB, We Answer Your Spa Questions! What Is Cupping?
Hey all! BusyBeeBlogger is adding in a new feature. A good friend of mine owns Ocean Day Spa in Carsbad, Ca and she has agreed to answer questions you may have about spa services. You may not be comfortable asking the front desk at your favorite spa just what ear candling, or cupping is, but you can ask here!
This week, KW answers questions about CUPPING.
I’ve heard about celebs doing something called cupping. Gwyneth Paltrow is said to have done it and even suggested that others get it done. But, what is Cupping?
Cupping refers to an ancient Chinese practice in which a glass cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced by suctioning out air, so that the skin and muscle are drawn into and held in the cup. Traditionally, the cups are heated with alcohol and flame and Kerry Walsh, the owner is currently the only one at Ocean day Spa that does traditional fire cupping. (This is very intense and not for everybody.)
The modern world of cupping has embraced another wonderful technique called massage cupping that has powerful results and all the ladies at Ocean Day Spa are trained in this modality. Massage cupping is a modified version of fire cupping and can still affect the body up to four inches into the tissues. Cupping helps release toxins and activates the lymphatic system. It is also highly affective in stimulating circulation to stagnant muscles and skin, loosening adhesions, connective tissue and stubborn knots. Long strokes down the sides of the spine and along the ribs provide ease to rib cage expansion and breathing. Cupping is the best deep tissue massage available. After a cupping massage you will have increased range of motion and improved posture.
