It is with heavy heart that we share the news that groundbreaking comedienne Joan Rivers has passed away. She was 81.
UPDATE- From Joan Rivers’ Facebook Page
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.
Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.
My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.” – Melissa Rivers
The AP is reporting that Joan has died following complications that occurred during a routine throat surgery last week. Joan was kept in a medically induced coma following going into cardiac arrest during the procedure and also stopped breathing. Apparently, she remained on life support until today. Her daughter, Melissa, decided to let her mother die peacefully after taking her off life support earlier today.
Joan was a true pioneer for women in comedy, often filing in to guest host the Tonight Show and then hosting her own late night TV talk show DECADES before the likes of Chelsea Handler.
In addition to her often outrageous standup, Rivers was a genius when it came to marketing, both herself and her jewelry on the Home Shopping Network. She was also an early ally of the LGBT community, inviting drag queens onto her 1980s daytime talk show. More recently, she officiated over two same-sex weddings in New York this year. (New Now Next)
In regards to the wedding New Now Next mentioned, Joan posted this on her Instagram –
Some of you might remember the impromptu wedding I performed for Joe Aiello and Jed Ryan at my book signing at Barnes & Noble in July. Since it was totally unplanned, Joe and Jed didn’t have a marriage license on them. They’ve since gotten one, and asked me to marry them again, this time “for real.” So we did it! On Friday, August 15th, 2014 at the Plaza Athenee hotel in New York City, Joseph Aiello officially married William (Jed) Ryan. The ceremony was attended by family and friends, with a wonderful reception following. I’m so thrilled and honored to have been a part of it! Congratulations, Joe and Jed! #JoeAndJed #Wedding
We here at Busy Bee Blogger cannot imagine pop culture without her now. She was biting, and no holds barred, all cards on the table and we loved every moment of it. You always knew what Joan was thinking and I would much rather have it that way than to have someone who put on a mask their entire life never taking a stand.
Our hearts and prayers are with her family now.
