Giving It Up For 40 Days

coffee mug lent

Today is the first day of Lent. Traditionally, one would give up something for 40 days, until Easter.

Esquire even did a piece on giving up something that is ingrained in their daily lives such as alcohol, email, the news, driving, to see what the effect was on them for one month.

This year, I have chosen to give up coffee. My life seems to revolve around my coffee cup, so this will be an especially interesting experience. Last year I gave up sugar, like I had in the past. It was much more difficult than I had expected and I was diving everyone crazy with my mood swings.

Even if you aren’t religious giving up something for an extended period of time can change your outlook on why you do certain things. Is it just habit or do you really enjoy/need to do it?

For those giving something up today, what is it?

Good luck.
