10 Questions With DSC's Quiet Talking James

The DSC this BACK ON AIR in San Diego thanks to 100.7 Jack FM. In order to celebrate with all of us, the DSC is bringing in some very special guests this week.  Yesterday (August 3) it was Quiet Talking James!

He was already grilled about his love life and his “arch enemy” Tony Mason on air, so Busy Bee asked QTJ if he would answer 10 questions (from DSC listeners!!) for Busy Bee.  So sit down and have a cocktail the questions are about to start.

1. How did you start calling in to DSC? Did they give you the name “Quiet Talking James”?

HERE IS HOW I REMEMBER IT:
I HAVE BEEN A FREQUENT CALLER INTO THE SHOW SINCE IT’S INCEPTION, BUT ABOUT 7 YEARS AGO I GUESS I WAS MORE FREQUENT THAN USUAL. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE EMILY KNEW MY VOICE WELL ENOUGH THAT SHE DIDN’T HAVE TO ASK WHO WAS CALLING. ONE CALL IN PARTICULAR, CHAINSAW COMMENTED THAT JAMES WAS A “QUIET TALKER” AND HE AND DAVE WENT INTO A FRENZY OF MOCKERY AND I LAUGHED WITH GLEE AND REMARKED THAT “I WAS A PUPPET!!!” AFTER THAT I WAS QTJ. WHICH CAUSES EVERYONE WHO KNOWS ME TO COUGH UP IN SHOCK, BECAUSE NATURALLY MY SPEAKING VOICE IS PRETTY LOUD. BUT BECAUSE IT’S LOUD I TEND TO OVER COMPENSATE WHEN I TALK ON THE PHONE. I AM SELF CONSCIOUS THAT I MAY BE ‘SHOUTING’. IN 2005 WHEN I WON THE JINGLE CONTEST WITH ‘SINATRA ASNR’ I WAS RECOGNIZED BY A WIDER GROUP OF DSC FANS. AFTER THAT IT’S BEEN JUST FUN BEING KNOWN AS A WANNABE.

2. What do/did people do when they realized YOU were QTJ? (then and now)

I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT POSITIVE AND SUPPORTIVE COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE REGARDING THIS. PEOPLE SEEM GENUINELY HAPPY TO MEET ME, BUT I HAVE TO TRIBUTE THAT TO THE POPULARITY OF THE SHOW… BEING PART OF SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE IN SAN DIEGO LOVES.

3. You were on the show this AM (Tuesday August 3rd). How did that happen?

EMILY EMAILED ME LAST WEEK AND ASKED IF I WOULD LIKE TO COME INTO THE STUDIO AND CHAT ABOUT WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON DURING DSC’S HIATUS. I WAS THRILLED. AND SO WILL ALL OF YOU WHEN YOU KNOW THAT BLIND STAN AND TONY MASON WERE ASKED AS WELL! ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW MUCH DSC MAKES THE LISTENERS PART OF THE SHOW.

Read the rest of Quiet Talking James’ answers after the jump!

4 So you are in a band, Redhanded… what can you tell me about that?

I HAVE BEEN WITH REDHANDED SINCE 2001. I AUDITIONED FOR THEM AND LUCKILY THEY HIRED ME BECAUSE ITS BEEN EASILY THE GREATEST SOURCE OF PERSONAL SATISFACTION I HAVE HAD. I HAVE BEEN IN 2 BANDS. ONE FROM 1987-1995 AND THEN REDHANDED, AND I CAN SAY THAT, TO A MAN, EACH MEMBER OF THESE 2 BANDS HAVE BEEN AND CONTINUE TO BE MY GREAT FRIENDS. AND I THINK IT SHOWS ON STAGE. THE AUDIENCE SEES THAT WE ENJOY PLAYING TOGETHER AND THAT MAKES OUR GIGS FUN FOR ALL OF US. DAMNED GOOD THING TOO, BECAUSE WE DON’T MAKE ANY REAL MONEY. ABOUT 60 BUCKS EACH, AND THAT WILL PAY FOR A TANK OF GAS AND A COUPLE DRINKS!

(BBB note: Redhanded was kind enough to play for Rock Out Beat Cancer at the Belly Up Tavern in June. And they rocked the house!)

5. Do the members of the band get tired of you being “QTJ”? Or is it even an issue?

I THINK ITS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THEY LIKE IT OR IT ISN’T AN ISSUE. THE BETTER QUESTION WOULD BE, ” DO THEY GET TIRED OF ME BEING THEIR SINGER?”

6. What are the last 3 bands YOU have seen live? Who are your favorite performers?
PINE MOUNTAIN LOGS AT THE BELLY UP, PETER FRAMPTON AT HARRAHS AND PAUL ROGERS AT A BENEFIT CONCERT FOR THE FENDER MUSEUM IN MURRIETTA
MY FAVORITE PERFORMERS ARE QUEEN, YES, BURTON CUMMINGS, TODD RUNDGREN, ELTON JOHN, AND PAUL ROGERS. COINCIDENTALLY ALL GREAT VOCAL BANDS OR ARTISTS. I LIKE SINGERS…

7. I hear that you have a weekly meet up with friends, the He-man women haters? Um… what is this and who comes over?

I HAVE A GOOD FRIEND BRAD WHO I HAVE KNOWN FOR 20 YEARS. TO STAY IN TOUCH HE STARTED COMING DOWN TO MY PLACE EVERY FEW MONTHS FOR THE WEEKEND AND WE WOULD EAT AND DRINK AND TALK ALL WEEKEND. WE CALLED IT MAN-CATION BECAUSE HE GOT AWAY FROM HIS FAMILY FOR A BREATHER TO JUST RELAX WITH A BUDDY. HE NOW WORKS IN SORRENTO VALLEY WHILE LIVING IN LAKE ELSINORE SO SINCE I LIVE IN CARLSBAD HE COMES UP TO MY PLACE ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK TO SPARE HIM THE LONG DRIVE. WE ENJOY THE BROTHERHOOD WITH A BREAK FROM THE COMPANY OF ‘THE FAIRER SEX’.. WOMEN WOULD HEAR ABOUT IT AND WANT TO COME OVER BECAUSE IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE FOOD WAS GREAT, THE COMPANY BETTER AND THE EVENING FUN WHILE BEING DRAMA FREE. TO WHICH I SIMPLY REPLIED… “NO WAY.. THIS IS A BOYS CLUB”. MY FRIEND PATRICK JOINED US AND WORD SPREAD, AS DID THE LADIES’ DESIRE TO TAKE PART. “DON’T BE SILLY” WAS MY USUAL REPLY AND IT JUST REMINDED ME OF THE LITTLE RASCALS ALL BOYS CLUB ‘THE HE-MAN WOMEN HATERS CLUB” SO WE HAVE NAMED IT THUS… WE HAVE A CLUB SONG, A PASSWORD AND IT’S SOMETHING WE RARELY MISS!

8. What is your favorite movie, and why?

IT’S A TOSS UP AND THE TWO ARE QUITE DIFFERENT. “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE” BECAUSE OF THE WRITING ACTING AND SENTIMENT. DONNA REED AIN’T A BAD REASON EITHER. THE OTHER IS “THE GODFATHER” BECAUSE ITS JUST THE EPIC FAMILY DRAMA… TRAGIC AND QUITE THE OPPOSITE OF WONDERFUL LIFE.

9. I hear that you are quite the home entertainer. Cooking for friends and “loved ones” ;-) So this question (from a reader) If you were to bring a dish to a dinner what would you make?

WELL LET ME SAY YOU PREFACED THE QUESTION WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM THE EVENTUAL QUESTION.. I DO LOVE TO COOK AND ENTERTAIN FRIENDS FAMILY AND LOVED ONES. THAT I LIKE TO DO IN MY HOME. WHEN I DO THAT I LIKE ALL THE COURSES… COCKTAILS AND NOSHING…. CHEESES, OLIVES, DIPS ETC… THEN I LIKE GREAT SALADS… TRYING TO BE CREATIVE AND UNIQUE. THEN I LIKE SIMPLE BUT HEARTY ENTREES… I LOVE BEEF AND VEGETABLES. BUT WERE I TO BE BRINGING A DISH SOMEWHERE ELSE THAN I HAVE TO STAY VERY SIMPLE. I DON’T LIKE TO BRING SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE BUILT OR RE-HEATED AT THE HOST’S HOUSE. SO IN THAT CASE I WILL BRING SALAD OR DESSERT.

BUT LET ME BACK UP AND SAY THAT I THINK THE TRUTH IS THAT I AM REALLY JUST A GOOD COOK FOR THE TYPICAL MAN. IF I WERE A WOMAN I DOUBT THAT MY COOKING WOULD STAND OUT. THE MAIN THING IS THAT I THINK MY FOOD JUST TASTES GOOD, AND I THINK I AM CREATIVE AND RESOURCEFUL… NOT A GOURMET…

10. What is the best thing that has come out of being involved in the DSC?

WELL I WON A LOT OF PRIZES!!! AND OVER THE YEARS IT’S BEEN WORTH A GOOD DEAL OF MONEY AND A LOT OF FUN TIMES. APART FROM THAT, BEING ABLE TO SAY THAT I AM FRIENDS WITH THE BEST RADIO SHOW IN AMERICA IS PRETTY DAMNED SPECIAL. THEN ON TOP OF THAT I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT FRIENDLY AND FLATTERING EXPERIENCES WITH ALL OF THE OTHER GREAT LISTENERS AND FANS OF DSC. OH AND HAVING A GOSSIP WEBSITE ASK ME FOR AN INTERVIEW IS PRETTY COOL TOO!

Thank you Quiet Talking James for taking the time to answer all of our questions!   You have certainly been a big part of the DSC throughout the past 20 years, and we love hearing you on the radio. Love your show.
