Oh it’s quite the day when those that comment on the news become the news. MSNBC’s left leaning political commentator, Keith Olbermann, had found himself out of a job due to not disclosing the fact he made donations to three Democrats running for Congress: Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway, and Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords.
MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement Friday: “I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.” [politico]
So why was Keith Olbermann suspended in the first place? I mean, can’t a man just donate money to political candidates if he feels like it?
NBC has a rule against employees contributing to political campaigns, and a wide range of news organizations prohibit political contributions — considering it a breach of journalistic independence to contribute to the candidates they cover. [politico]
Who knows if MSNBC is doing this only because Politico aired their dirty laundry, or if MSNBC would have done it on their own. I’m leaning it’s because of Politico. Not that I always trust Politico, but they do have this one right. So good for them.
Oh, and Chris Hayes was SUPPOSED to take Olbermann’s place on “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” BUT it was discovered that Hayes ALSO made contributions to two Democratic candidates in 2008 and 2009. Oopsie!
