The juggernaut that is Mad Men is coming to an end, but not any time soon. It seems that instead of just putting this once fabulously written show out of its misery quickly, AMC is going to try to milk it for all of the viewership it can.
“This approach has worked well for many programs across multiple networks, and, most recently for us, with Breaking Bad, which attracted nearly double the number of viewers to its second-half premiere than had watched any previous episode,” says AMC president Charlie Collier. “We are determined to bring Mad Men a similar showcase. In an era where high-end content is savored and analyzed, and catch-up time is used well to drive back to live events, we believe this is the best way to release the now 14 episodes than remain of this iconic series.” [THR]
Basically, AMC is pulling another Breaking Bad, splitting the final season of Mad Men between 2014 and 2015. There will be 14 episodes total. The first half is “The Beginning,” and the final seven shown in 2015 “The End of an Era.”
It is sad that this once well written thought provoking series is going to be gone. But considering I was only watching the last season to see the clothes, and the set design, it was beyond time to let this go. It’s a pity that the writing that was present in the first season had just vanished. Maybe they all started believing their own hype and decided to sail on their success.
I will be watching this final season, though, just to see where these characters end up.
What do you think about the split season for Mad Men?
