Day 2 of 30 Miles In 30 Days Challenge #5280ofAwesome

30 miles in 30 days 5280ofawesome shoes

Yesterday was completely crazy for this pinup. I had so much work to do for the site, and then I drove up to Hollywood for a photo shoot (more on that another day). So I only had a limited amount of time to get everything in.

Dad Bee and I wanted to get our mile in together so in the mid-day sun and heat we headed out. I don’t suggest that anyone do this. Especially if you have any health conditions or haven’t been active in a long time. It was not the happiest of runs that we have done, but knowing that it was just a mile and a half on our course made it doable.

Thank you Dad Bee for getting my pinup booty out there. He’s pretty bad ass.

You too can join the group of us on Instagram and Twitter or just follow along with hashtag #5280ofAwesome. Either way is cool with me!

Get those frosted glasses ready for National Daiquiri Day. Blue Chair Bay Rum Strawberry Basil Recipe

Tomorrow, Friday July 19th is national daiquiri day, and it couldn’t be here soon enough.  Is there any better way for a pinup to beat this oppressive heat than with a nice cold cocktail? Maybe if I was lying on a white sand beach somewhere with my toes in the sand with Kenny Chesney. That might make it a little better. But a nice cold daiquiri is tops.

Luckily for me, I can at least put my feet in my kiddie pool listening to Chesney on the radio sipping a daiquiri made with his rum.

That’s right, Kenny Chesney just launched a personal line of spirits called Blue Chair Bay Rum. The product (White, Coconut, Coconut Spiced) is delicious and, better yet, not a celebrity endorsement. Kenny dreamt up and funded the entire venture himself.

Well then, Kenny, since you put in all that work, don’t mind if I do.

Blue Chair Bay Rum Strawberry Basil Daiquiri

2 oz. Blue Chair Bay Rum
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
3/4 oz. simple syrup
1 strawberry, sliced
2 basil leaves

Directions: Muddle the strawberry and basil in the lime juice and simple syrup. Add Blue Chair Bay rum and ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass.
Garnish: floating basil leaf

You can blend this with ice if you like, or just have it chilled. Either way, it is a great way to enjoy the summer heat.

It’s A Scorcher, Hot Weather Stay Cool Plan

pinup girl elvgren cooling off fan ice block

It’s incredibly hot right now in Southern California, and even pinup girls need a way to beat the heat. All my fans are already on, and that ice block in Elvgren’s drawing is looking pretty good. My midcentury friends got up to 122 degrees yesterday in Palm Springs yesterday, and it’s supposed to be more of the same, today.

The people to help out are the young and your elderly neighbors. Go see if they need a fan, or some ice and water. There may even be some heat zones set up in your neighborhoods that have air conditioning set up just for these times of the year. These could be local schools, or churches. The mall is another great place to just go and sit in the cool air for free.

Get plenty of fluids, and not just daiquiris. Lots of water can help keep you cool.

Stay in the shade. The temperature can be considerably cooler out of direct sunlight.

Don’t forget your furry friends. Don’t keep the dogs and kitties outside in the sun! They are just as prone to heat as you are. Lots of water and keep them cool.

Please take care of you and yours, and check in on your neighbors that may need a little help.

Stay cool SoCal!

How Your Wine Is Made, Pressing Grapes At Fifty Barrels Winery #weekwithilx

In my week that was full of luxury, heated seats anyone?, I used my voice activated map on the ILX (once I figured it out) to head out and see just how my favorite wine was made.

The men of Fifty Barrels Winery let me into the barrel room to watch them press the grapes for their Cabernet.

It turns out, that the pressing and making of wine has not changed too much, ever. The press is filled with grapes (after sitting in their bins for about two weeks) and then they are squished. Plain and simple. There is a pump that brings the juice into a giant container, and the press has a giant air bladder that fills with air. Other than that, it’s all done by hand.

Once the holder is filled with the juice, it will eventually go into barrels for about 18 months. Then we get to drink it!

Of course, I think they simplified a few of the steps for me to get the basic idea. But I was fascinated watching how it all works.

Check out my video of the process below!
