Madonna makes good to Italy
Once famous for wearing an “Italians do it better” T-shirt in her Papa don’t Preach video, Madonna has honored her family’s former hometown in Italy in the wake of the earthquake.
Madonna’s paternal grandparents were from Pacentro until 1919. After the quake hit, the mayor of Pacento made a call to Madonna to ask for help and she answered.
Madonna, whose paternal grandparents lived in Pacentro until 1919, made a “substantial donation” for the relief effort following the 6.3 magnitude quake that left more than 200 dead, says her publicist Liz Rosenberg. The rep wouldn’t give the amount, but a source says it’s about $500,000.
“I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are from,” Madonna tells PEOPLE. “My heart goes out to the families that have lost loved ones or their homes.”
Good on you Madonna. I mean, it’s not like it was a huge expense to her, but I’m sure that she may feel some tie to the town since that’s where her family is from. And the good press doesn’t hurt now does it.
Here are more pics of Madonna leaving the Assaggi restaurant in London. She was seen chatting with the dark haired man, also in pics, who followed her to her place after leaving. Meow! Italians do it better you know.
