A Mad Men Old Fashioned Inspired Cocktail Recipe

Get ready for Mad Men final episodes with the BusyBeeBlogger Old Fashioned Cocktail made with Sia Scotch Whisky

Maybe it is because all of us here at BusyBeeBlogger have been binge watching Mad Men getting ready for the end of the series, but we have been enjoying a little bit of the brown tinted spirits. Our new drink of choice is most definitely inspired by Don Draper, and his affinity for the Old Fashioned cocktail. Our version involves woman owned Sia Scotch Whisky, a small batch whisky that gives other women entrepreneurs a hand up.

Busy Bee Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

1 1/2 ounces of Sia Scotch Whisky
1/2 orange cut into chunks and frozen
Dash of Angostura bitters (if you have them)

This recipe came out of having too many oranges in the house that were not going to be eaten in time. We had to slice all of the peels off of them and freeze what we could. Luckily for us, the large slices and chunks of oranges inspired our new cocktail. Old Fashioned Cocktails traditionally have a slice of fresh orange and a cherry for flavor and garnish. Adding the frozen oranges added the flavor needed to the scotch whisky and does not water down the cocktail as they thaw.

If you want a little more fun with this twist on the classic cocktail you can add a few leaves of mint in with frozen oranges and muddle before adding the Sia whisky.

So as your getting ready for the farewell season of Mad Men to begin this April make sure to get out the good glasses. Throw some oranges in the freezer and make yourself a Busy Bee Old Fashioned Cocktail. We would love to see what snacks you pair with our new cocktail, tag us on social media and show us!

Song of the Day: Halt and Catch Fire Inspired Talk Talk “Talk Talk”

Lee Pace Halt and Catch Fire strip club
Lee Pace as Joe Macmillan Halt and Catch Fire

Today’s song is retro in a whole different way. No Sinatra, no Rosemary Clooney, in fact it isn’t even vintage in the same way. I have become obsessed with a new show on AMC, Halt and Catch Fire. It is basically Mad Men in the computer age. I think they even use the same office set as Mad Men’s season 1 for the Cardiff Electric Dallas office.

AMC paired up with Spotify (which I have been using at work to listen to everything) to develop 80s playlists for each of the main characters. I have been listening to these playlists almost every day now and I love them! Each character, from Lee Pace’s sex-driven, success powered mysterious Don Draper-esque leading man Joe MacMillan, to the underground young programmer Cameron Howe (played by Mackenzie Davis), and even the COMPUTER, Giant, gets his own playlist (the party playlist).

Mad Men Mid-Season Finale Tonight On AMC

mad men mid-season finale 2014

After 7 seasons, tonight is the mid-season finale for Mad Men on AMC. Oh my. With a lack luster final season, Mad Men, Matt Weiner and AMC still decided to split it into two years a la Breaking Bad? What a shame.

While the clothing and the set designs are still going well, the momentum of the show is long gone (Season 3, 4, maybe after the 1st season?) It was leaked that they were told season 5 that it might be their last one, so it makes much more sense now how there has been a lack of flow for the past few years. Oh well, at least there’s only one half of a season left.

January Jones in the bath for violet grey magazine
The best thing to come out of this year has been the interviews with the female cast. January Jones did the most jaw dropping naked photo spread for online magazine Violet Grey. She proves that this single mother is still hot.

Christina Hendricks esquire

And Christina Hendricks (aka Joan) wrote a letter to men in the pages of Esquire on what men should know about being with women. From what we like to see you wear, what we remember, and what to drink (scotch, just fyi). Oh and did I mention all the photos of Christina Hendricks in her lingerie?

So who is watching the mid-season finale with me tonight?  I know, I talk smack, I just want to see how it ends!

Mad Men’s Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell) Final Season Interview

Pete-Campbell-Vincent-Kartheiser-airport-mad_men_season_7-Frank-Ockenfels-AMC

Mad Men’s last season started just a few weeks ago and everyone is back to sitting in front of the TV Sunday nights.  The shine may have dulled, but a lot of us are still curious as to what happens to these mid-century advertisers.

AMC sat down with Vincent Kartheiser, aka Pete Campbell and asked him about what makes Pete tick, his style, a fake dog on set and those awful speaker phones.

Q: Is it hard adjusting to life at the SC&P L.A. office? You must miss working with the other actors.

A: It’s mostly hard because I’m kind of a weird duck, and I’ve gotten used to everyone realizing that I’m a weird duck and accepting my weirdness. And now there’s all these new people who I forget that they don’t know that I’m weird.

Q: You live in L.A. Got any advice for Pete on acclimating to the city?

A: Stay off the 405, take Fountain, and don’t believe the hype.

Q: That sounds like that Saturday Night Live sketch, “The Californians,” that jokes about which highways to take in L.A.

A: [Laughs] I love “The Californians!” “I’m just going to leave here and hop on the 101 and exit on Western.” I love that. It’s amazing, amazing.
