A Mad Men Old Fashioned Inspired Cocktail Recipe

Get ready for Mad Men final episodes with the BusyBeeBlogger Old Fashioned Cocktail made with Sia Scotch Whisky

Maybe it is because all of us here at BusyBeeBlogger have been binge watching Mad Men getting ready for the end of the series, but we have been enjoying a little bit of the brown tinted spirits. Our new drink of choice is most definitely inspired by Don Draper, and his affinity for the Old Fashioned cocktail. Our version involves woman owned Sia Scotch Whisky, a small batch whisky that gives other women entrepreneurs a hand up.

Busy Bee Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

1 1/2 ounces of Sia Scotch Whisky
1/2 orange cut into chunks and frozen
Dash of Angostura bitters (if you have them)

This recipe came out of having too many oranges in the house that were not going to be eaten in time. We had to slice all of the peels off of them and freeze what we could. Luckily for us, the large slices and chunks of oranges inspired our new cocktail. Old Fashioned Cocktails traditionally have a slice of fresh orange and a cherry for flavor and garnish. Adding the frozen oranges added the flavor needed to the scotch whisky and does not water down the cocktail as they thaw.

If you want a little more fun with this twist on the classic cocktail you can add a few leaves of mint in with frozen oranges and muddle before adding the Sia whisky.

So as your getting ready for the farewell season of Mad Men to begin this April make sure to get out the good glasses. Throw some oranges in the freezer and make yourself a Busy Bee Old Fashioned Cocktail. We would love to see what snacks you pair with our new cocktail, tag us on social media and show us!

View of the Southern California Carlsbad flower fields in bloom
Happy first day of spring! While the rest of the country, at least the North East, is still under snow, Southern California is in full bloom. The Carlsbad Flower Fields are open for visits for the rest of Spring, and everyone is invited.

The Carlsbad Flower Fields are over 50 acres of colorful Giant Ranunculus and other specialty flowers. Every year 125,000 visitors, tourists and locals alike, visit the flower fields to take in the beautiful colors. Visitors can view the fields on foot, or even take a wagon ride through the flowers. There are benches and tables available for people to take a rest if you get tired from walking through the flower fields as well. Due to safety issues, pets are not invited to share in the outdoor fun, but certified service animals are welcomed.

Every year the ranunculus are in bloom, and fill the drive home and to do errands with a little bit of happiness.Even locals get excited when the flowers bloom and you can walk through the fields. Bring a sack lunch with you to enjoy in the middle of the fields, not a bad way to enjoy our beautiful weather. You can even bring flowers home with you. The flower fields sell bulbs for you to plant at home as well as fresh cut flowers for you to enjoy now.

Visitors can visit the flower fields this year March 1, 2015 through May 10, 2015. Tickets will run you $12 for adults and $6 for children. If you want to enjoy the wagon ride, it will be 5 dollars more. Cocktail Recipe – The Leonardo Punch

The Leonardo Punch Cocktail brings Amaro Lucano to the party. Perfect for Spring get togethers

Spring Cocktail

There are a few ways to usher in the Spring when the rest of the country is finally thawing out from all of the snow. Start decorating the house in lighter colors, start buying more fruit at the grocery store, and throwing a Spring Themed get together this weekend. Easter is still weeks away, so I say throwing an early spring party is what we all need to get into the “bye bye winter blues” feeling. Besides that, it is going to be in the 80s here in Southern California this weekend, so why not throw a party! Sorry rest of the country.

The Leonardo Punch

Serves 6 people
Ingredients
2 oz of lemon sugar
8 1/2 oz of clear apple juice
8 1/2 oz of ginger ale
4 oz of Amaro Lucano
4 oz of Brandy
4 bar spoons of bitter cardamom
citrus slices

Directions
Place lemon sugar, clear apple juice and ginger ale in a punch bowl. Add the 4 ounces of Amaro Lucano and 4 ounces ml of Brandy, four bar spoons of bitter cardamom and last add the citrus slices.

This spring cocktail punch recipe can be made any time of year, but there is something about chilled punch that that makes me think indoor/outdoor weekend get-togethers with friends. The lemon in the Leonardo Punch brings a freshness that wakes up the senses. And they look like slices of sunshine while in the glass or floating on the punch bowl.

Adding what is usually an after dinner drink, Amaro Lucano, to the cocktail brings a new Italian twist to the cocktail punch. Amaro Lucano is usually served on its own after dinner, but due to its caramel flavor it mixes well with the ginger ale and brandy.

You could use this spring punch recipe to celebrate birthdays, engagements, or even because it is the weekend and we like being together. CHEERS!

Portable Bluetooth Speaker with Great Sound?

The BOSE SoundLink mini easily fits into a travel bag for the beach. Perfect for southern California living

Bose SoundLink Mini Review

Searching for a portable Bluetooth speaker that actually sounds clear and provides a quality listening experience along with the portability to take it with you anywhere? My thought was I had to choose between either quality sound or convenience and portability. I had come to the conclusion that I’d never find a portable Bluetooth speaker that sounded clear and actually had depth to it, but then I heard the Bose SoundLink Mini.

As I was unwrapping and getting the BOSE SoundLink Mini setup I already had the idea that it was going to be another disappointment. We had seen more than our fair share of bluetooth speakers while at CES, and very few were worth listening to.  The SoundLink is a little bigger than some of its counterparts but not huge and setup was rather simple. Using the included charging cradle, which is very convenient compared with the traditional plug, I let it charge for a few hours and then with the push of one button on the device and a couple on my Nexus 5 I was all ready to go.

The BOSE soundlink sits on its cradle for easy charging.

After loading up a quick playlist what came next I can only call amazement, I was absolutely floored with the quality of audio that came out of this little guy. Turning the volume up I was pleasantly surprised that even the highest volume I didn’t get that normal “Tinny” sound and feedback you’ll notice on most portable speakers. Excited by the sound quality I tried a few more songs, this time looking for something with a little bit of bass. Now as expected with such a small speaker and no dedicated subwoofer the bass isn’t defined but it is much better than any other portable I have tested to date. The Bose SoundLink Mini also stayed connected as I walked around the house going about my business with very few skips or drop offs in signal, as is experienced with all Bluetooth connections.

One feature that is missing, but I’m actually happy about, is that when you get a call it only rings on your phone not on the speaker. Personally I hate it when you are listening to a great song and then suddenly your phone is ringing and that sound is blasting through the speaker, or worse you answer the call and its default function is to play the call through the speaker so your whole party can hear the conversation. The Bose SoundLink Mini simply mutes the music and your phone rings like normal, when you are done with the call the music picks right back up where it left off. I believe this is a win and it’s smart to realize that most people have built in speaker phone, if they want to make a call on speaker they will use the feature on their phone.

The BOSE SoundLink mini lets you take your great sound with you

If there is any disappointment in testing this, it’s the fact that the testing period has come to an end and it has to go back now, so Bose if you’re listening out there I love this speaker and I’d gladly test it for you again, wink wink. Then again for only $199 at Verizon I might just pony up the dough and buy one, if you are on the market for a Portable Bluetooth Speaker you should do the same, it’s definitely worth the money and you won’t be disappointed. This is an outright win in the Portable Bluetooth Speaker category, and I’m happy that Bose was able to live up to its history of providing a great listening experience.

This is a non-sponsored post. We did receive a BOSE SoundLink Mini to test that was returned. All editorial content is our own.

Snoop in A Writer’s Goody Drawer

Take a look inside my writer goody drawer. RESCUE stress relief

Writers and bloggers are a nosy group of people. We like to look around everyone else’s offices, homes, and even closets just to get an idea of how people tick. To pay back all of the people I have snooped around on, knowingly or not, I decided to give everyone a peek into my goody drawer that I have at work.

Southern California Writer Goody Drawer

This is not where I keep paper clips, pens or note pads related for work. Those are all found in the top drawer, this one is all for me. This is my goody drawer. When I am not trying to meet deadlines, or on the phone with my variety of clients, I am probably rummaging through here to find a little bit of happy.
