5 Expensive Celebrity Weddings [Guest Post]

Celebrities seem to have all the glitz and glam in their daily lives, so of course if they’re celebrating it’s going to go even further.

Reality starlet Kim Kardashian recently married NBA forward Kris Humphries. The couple started dating in December 2010 and he proposed to her five months later by spelling out “Will you marry me?” in rose petals on the floor of her Beverly Hills bedroom. Their lavish wedding happened just a few months later in Montecito, California and cost $10 million, most of which were items donated to the couple in exchange for brand publicity. In fact, the newlyweds ended up making $17.9 million. That’s right – they profited from their wedding. The ceremony will be aired in October in a two-part special, making Mr. and Mrs. Humphries $15 million. They also sold the rights to the engagement announcement to People magazine for $300,000, wedding photos to People magazine for $2.5 million, bridal shower photos to OK! Magazine for $100,000, and Tao Las Vegas paid Kim $50,000 to host her bachelorette party. Reports have said that she wants to be pregnant by the end of 2011.

Here are five other celebrity couples who had pricey weddings that turned out to be worth it – all of these couples are still happily married.

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky: Investment-banker Marc Mezvinsky started dating Chelsea in 2005 and proposed over Thanksgiving in 2009. Former President Bill Clinton walked his daughter down the aisle in Rhinebeck, New York in 2010. They estimate the wedding cost $5 million with $25,000 of that spent on her Vera Wang wedding dress. They also spent $600,000 on air-conditioned tents, $250,000 in jewelry, $11,000 on their wedding cake, $24,000 on photographers and videographers, and $203,000 for security.

TristaRehn and Ryan Sutter: This is the first success story from the reality dating show “The Bachelorette.” The couple met and wed on national television and ABC picked up the $4 million tab, even giving them a check for $1 million as a wedding gift. They exchanged $25,000 diamond and platinum wedding bands at the Palm Springs Rancho Mirage Resort in 2003. Trista’s Badgley Mischka wedding dress had a $70,000 price tag and her $50,000 heals were encrusted with 282 diamonds. The couple has two children, Maxwell (4) and Blakesley (2).

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: Everything has been elaborate with these two and it all began when Tom jumped on Oprah’s couch to proclaim his love for Katie. He carried these grand gestures through to his proposal, atop the Eiffel Tower, and then on to the wedding in 2006, held at a 15th-century Italian castle. It is estimated that their ceremony cost around $3.5 million, $180,000 of that just spent on wine. Andrea Boccelli entertained the guests, who included David and Victoria Beckham, Will and Jada Smith, and Brooke Shields. The couple has a five-year-old daughter, Suri.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones: There were 20,000 cream-colored roses filling the terrace room at New York City’s Plaza Hotel for the couple’s wedding in 2000. Catherine’s Christian Lacroix dress matched the flowers, as did their six-foot, 10-tier vanilla wedding cake. Their guests, including Jimmy Buffett and Art Garfunkle, moved to the Grand Ballroom after the marriage ceremony, where they had dinner and dancing. The couple spent a total of $1.5 million on the entire event. The couple has a son, Dylan Michael (11), and daughter, Carys Zeta (8).

Donald Trump and Melania Knauss: This is the Donald’s third marriage and he still went all out, spending a little over $1 million. Her $100,000 Christian Dior dress took more than 1,000 hours to make with 1,500 hand-stitched crystal rhinestones and pearls, as well as a 13-foot train and 16-foot veil. Their seven-tier Grand Marnier chiffon cake was five-feet high, weighed 200 pounds, and had 3,000 icing roses on it. They filled the Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church in Palm Beach, Florida with 450 friends and family. They were married in 2005 and then in 2006, Melania gave birth to Donald’s fifth child, Barron William.
