Well, if Carmen Electra is qualified as a guest judge, why not?
Lady Gaga’s first major TV appearance came on SYTYCD in 2008, when she appeared with her song “Just Dance.” And she appeared at the judges table last week wearing a blue wig, sun glasses, and an outrageous outfit complete with a hat. Her hair was draped in front of one side of her face, and I remember thinking, “how on earth can she even see the dancing?” One routine into the nights’ performances, and she removed the glasses, and not long after that she removed her hat.
With Lady Gaga, you never really know what to expect and I was interested to see how she would do as a guest judge. Despite her drama-filled looks, she offered up good constructive criticism and was very vocal towards each contestant. As the show progressed and she removed her glasses and hat, she opened up even more. She had a lot more constructive criticism to offer than past guest judges Kristen Chenoweth and Carmen Electra. She was even moved to tears with Marko’s second routine. And unlike some of the previous guest judges so far this season, Lady Gaga actually has a dance and theater background to fall back on.
She came across as a very intelligent, wise beyond her years at 25, and someone who was very sincere in offering her opinions to the upcoming dancers. After a few critiques, I completely forgot about what she was wearing and found myself really listening to what she had to say.
The last routine of the night inspired Gaga to throw her giant red shoes at Sasha and Melanie for their amazing routine. She threw a shoe on stage, and one to the choreographer as well as she said “in the dance community, when you do a really good job, you throw your shoe at the stage.”
She followed up the competition evening with a live performance on results night. As always full of flair and drama, and the crowd loved her.
How does Lady Gaga’s appearance compare to her guest appearance on American Idol earlier this year?
She mentored the top 4 on American Idol and appeared on the show as a guest performer. At first thought, it makes more sense that she mentor on Idol than judge on So You Think You Can Dance, but I think she did better on the dance reality show than she did on the singing one. She did offer some great advice to the Idol contestants and encourage each of them to bring some drama to their performances. But the mixture of personalities on the Idol show didn’t really get Lady Gaga, and what she was trying to teach them.
I think she did a much better job providing feedback to the dance contestants on So You Think You Can Dance than she did on American Idol. I hope to see her back again on the show next year.
