(From contributor Jon in Vancouver!)
Apologies for the lack of updates this week, I’ve been enjoying myself too much this week. I’m really tired too… today has been a roller-coaster.
The past few days have been pretty intense with Canada’s gold rush up the medal table and that hit an absolute peak today with the hockey game. After last weeks game against the USA was a tense affair and today’s was no different. When that winning goal went in, scored by Canada’s golden child, Sidney Crosby, the crowd at the bar I was at just went mental, as did I. The three USA supporters that braved the bar seemed to disappear at that point. Of course that then spilled out to the streets and I don’t think that there was one car that wasn’t honking it’s horn as it drove by…. and it’s still going on now at 8:30pm!
Now I’m not sure how the media elsewhere has portrayed the Olympics but it has been the craziest two weeks of my life. The buzz in town has been intense. There have been hundreds of thousands of people in the downtown core every day and the events and entertainment laid on by the city have been an absolute hit. I’ve seen great live music, shed a tear when Joannie Rochette danced with such passion to claim bronze, I’ve danced my butt off with 8,000 other people, I’ve met inspiring athletes, pointed visitors in the right direction, taken photo’s of visitors, watched some amazing performances, chatted with people from all over the world and just been overwhelmed with the support that the people of Vancouver have shown to all the athletes, Canadian and from elsewhere. It’s been an epic 17 days and I’m a proud Vancouverite right now.
And what about the closing ceremony? I loved the fact that they took the chance to show that this country doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Something that has become apparent to me over the past two weeks is that this country that I’ve now chosen to call home has really gotten under my skin. Now where’s that citizenship application?
